As Alexander Wang’s largest European market and one of the designer’s favourite cities in the world it was only a matter of time before Wang set up shop in London. Located in a former post office in the heart of Mayfair, the three-storey shopping destination offers the complete range of Wang’s menswear and womenswear collections, T by Alexander Wang, accessories, as well as the OBJECTS line.
The 31-year-old designer collaborated with Belgium architect Vincent van Duysen on the concept and design of the stunning new store. Synonymous with a minimalistic, utilitarian aesthetic, Wang evolves his signature retail codes for the London store by emphasising a play on textures and materials.
“I’ve always loved London and I am so proud and excited to open my first European flagship store here,” Wang revealed. “The multi-level space and the historical structure of the building gave us the opportunity to evolve our retail concept, and to adapt it specifically to this location.”
Vincent van Duysen added: “The essence of the London store reflects a coherent synergy between Alex and myself and creates a space that makes reference to both modern and classic archetypes. The rich heritage of the building and the Mayfair area juxtaposed with Alex’s fascination with less traditional materials – such as rubber, distressed chrome, embossed leathers – and the ‘unexpected’, create something very special that speaks strongly to our combined aesthetic – geometric proportions with a refined contemporary edge.”
The interior design respects the historic building structure, creating a powerful space defined by primary architectural elements: a geometric grid of silver travertine columns, beams and in-wall niches in matte black recycled rubber. Elegant, curved chrome tubes define display fixtures delineated by a composition of black rubber-effect metal coating, which is used on all cabinetry, creating curvilinear edges and tactile surfaces.
Women’s handbags, footwear and small leather goods are displayed on the ground level which consists of charcoal terrazzo and concrete. Display fixtures, and horizontal display surfaces are covered in luxurious grey suede, while walls and ceiling are finished in a light grey Venetian plaster. The greys are offset and accentuated by chrome fixture trims, hanging rails and detailing.
The womenswear and T by Alexander Wang collections can be found on the upper level, which features a dark grey concrete finish with inset wool carpet, reflecting the architecture of the beams in the space. Statement furniture completes the interior of the store, combining custom design furniture by Alexander Wang for Poltrona Frau, and Vincent Van Duysen Architects with the re-edition of 70s Italian design by Gianfranco Frattini by Tacchini, and sculptural works by artists Ben Storms and Gerard Kuijpers.
The new London store marks the 25th store worldwide for the Alexander Wang brand, and the first freestanding store in Europe. After it was confirmed last week that Wang was stepping down from his position as Creative Director at Balenciaga, we look forward to watching his already hugely successful eponymous brand grow from strength to strength.
