Do you feel that? A slight chill is in the air. As the leaves are turning yellow and days are becoming shorter it can only mean one thing. Winter is finally here. But don’t despair, the world of fashion is on hand to provide some much needed relief. One brand in particular I’m obsessed with is the simple yet understated Stone Island. It can be burdensome picking out just one coat or jacket to last you the season so inspired by the edit at Farfetch stone island collection, I will break each one down so you can come to a sensible decision. Winter Coats

I grew up in Eastern Europe so wearing a big coat whatever the season is in my nature. Although it may cover up all the layers you wanted to show off, it has the added benefit of keeping you warm and cosy. For me that’s a fair trade between style and comfort. There are so many coat styles to choose from we’re almost spoiled. From the simple zip or double breasted to the bigger hooded and puffer coats, the choice is in your hands. Because the coat will be the main part of your outfit I would pick a solid colour that you’re comfortable with. A dark coat means you need lighter trousers and jumpers to complete the outfit (and vice versa).

For the outfit above I went for a simple padded interior coat that has a strong, pliable collar. This allows you to put it up in annoying weather conditions and protect yourself from the elements. For the trousers I like to keep it simple, slim-fit or cargo in black and the job is done. A shirt and a jumper is the perfect winter combination so pick your style (I’m a crew neck man all the way) and you’re ready to show winter who’s boss. You should also pay close attention to the fabric your clothes are made from. Wool, straw and hemp are likely to keep your warm while plastics such as rayon and acrylic are much more durable.

Winter Jumpers

A snug wooly jumper should be a staple item in every man’s wardrobe. You also don’t have to wait for winter, its simplicity means you’re not bound by seasons or the latest fashion trends. I’ve taken lightweight jumpers to summer festivals and also purchased turtlenecks for the colder autumn months. If a turtleneck isn’t your style you can always buy a thick wooly scarf that can be taken off at a moment notice. Again, pay close attention to the colour and fabric before making your purchase. Try to pair a lighter sweater with some darker trousers and I would advise that you stick to wool and take care when giving it a wash.

My outfit choices are pretty plain but sometimes less really is more. You’re not a teenager anymore so jumpers with huge logos or designs are a big no-no. Keep it simple and comfortable and your body will thanks you at the end of the day. All the jumpers above are made of cotton, cashmere or wool which makes them a perfect winter companion. I also like to wear jumpers without any shirts underneath so it’s important to pay attention to the fabric due to the daily skin contact. Regular contact with plastics can cause irritation and dryness so a more natural fabric is key. Find your style (crew neck or v-neck) and you’re good to go.

Winter Jackets

There are numerous jacket types to choose from depending on where you live. For city weather a bomber or a leather jacket may do the trick as you’re protected from the elements by public transport and tall buildings. If you’re out in the open a waterproof or a feather down jacket is better because it’s lightweight and durable but perhaps not as stylish. So again it’s a game of compromise, do you value comfort over style or would you rather look effortlessly cool while chattering your teeth? I myself love a bomber jacket and cover up the collar with a super thick scarf. I refuse to compromise, there’s always a workaround.

For this outfit I chose a lightweight feather down jacket, a wooly jumper and some simple cargo trousers. Its button down nature is perfect for all seasons and to top it off it has about 12 pockets so you’re never out of room. Low top sneakers or brogues will keep it smart-casual while the jumper will look stylish in any indoor setting. But again, play around and find a style that you feel comfortable with. My pictures and outfits are just a guideline. At the end of the day there is no ‘right’ style to wear so don’t worry about how something looks because the only opinion that matters is yours. Stay classy and I’ll see you soon.
